Delivered by Dance Research Studio in partnership with Plymouth University

The Speaking Dancer: Interdisciplinary Performance Training (SDIPT) is a new and innovative Postgraduate Certificate that introduces cross disciplinary training methods and stimuli which support the artist as both performer and ‘author’, within a framework guided by experienced professional practitioners in which students will be required to both direct and be directed. The programme offers prospective students coming from a professional and or performing arts degree background the opportunity to rethink their relationship to their practice, and begin to frame concerns about disciplinarity in a broader context. For more established practitioners, SDIPT provides an ideal entry point into post graduate education. For performing arts graduates, the programme offers an opportunity to train and research within an atmosphere and context that is closely allied to external professional fields of practice.

SDIPT develops out of a successful pre-existing professional development programme directed by the choreographer and director Jacky Lansley at Dance Research Studio. Jacky Lansley will lead on both modules, in conjunction with guest practitioners and other members of the highly experienced staff team at Plymouth University. A core element of SDIPT is the focus on ensemble and collaborative work and all participants will be expected to take full advantage of the professional networking opportunities that the programme offers.

SDIPT will be delivered over three sites in London, Plymouth and Truro, making it particularly accessible to participants from the South West and South East regions. The weekend modular structure also makes the programme available to busy professionals and for those who want to travel from other parts of the UK and abroad.

MODULE 1: The Interdisciplinary Performer
This module will introduce core improvisation skills through creative play and the integration of body, mind and voice in both solo and ensemble practice. By focusing upon the practical exploration of vocal, kinaesthetic and auditory patterning, a strong foundation for interdisciplinary performance practice will be outlined and developed. The module aims to equip participants to become creative negotiators within the hybrid landscape of interdisciplinary performance practice.

MODULE 2: Visual Language and the Performer
This module will focus on the performer's embodiment of visual and formal awareness, combining practical and conceptual research and training methods; the module will investigate the influence of visual and performance art disciplines and strategies on dance and choreographic practice. The module aims to encourage self-reflexive and visually aware choreographic and performance methodologies.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The programme requires applicants to have successfully completed a three-year training programme in an appropriate arts discipline, or be able to show equivalent professional experience in relation to University of Plymouth’s APEL policy (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning – this might include previous training knowledge and skills gained through work experience or professional practice) as evidenced through an up-to-date CV. This will be discussed as part of the interview process.

Further information regarding application details for the 2012-2013 SDIPT PgCert programme will be released soon.
