GUESTS: R&D will take place in phases throughout February – September 2010, culminating in a work-in-progress showing at the Hall for Cornwall and other outcomes: a DVD, exhibition material, published articles, a parallel education programme. The project will explore the converging disciplines of dance, theatre and visual language and will be directed and choreographed by Jacky Lansley with creative collaborators including Tim Brinkman (Theatre Director), Fiona Chivers (visual artist and costume designer) and Jonathan Eato (Cornish based musician/composer). The diverse and experienced performers taking part are: Claudia Hope, Brett Jackson, Ursula Early, Angela Kelly, Polly Motley, and Tim Taylor. Partners will include Dartington College of Arts, University College Falmouth, University of Plymouth, The Works (Dance South West Cornwall).
As the title suggests GUESTS aims to invite and welcome ideas, processes and people across artistic boundaries, and exploit interdisciplinary strategies which defy categorisation. Lansley's work has for many years explored and pushed the boundaries of dance, theatre and visual/site specific performance towards the making of more recent major works such as Holding Space, View from the Shore and Standing Stones. With co-director Tim Brinkman the artist shares a profound commitment to interdisciplinary practice, particularly where it converges with dance. Within the UK, despite many exciting developments, there can still be a divisive split between dance and theatre, mind and body – particularly within training contexts, leading to weaknesses at a professional and artistic level; both Lansley and Brinkman believe that integrated performance practice can have a profound influence on many areas of life experience and for all generations.
The project will be process driven and will use a variety of themes and stimuli to explore approaches to interdisciplinary practice – from the perspectives of both making and performing work. Building on their previous collaboration – View from the Shore – and on their experience of co-delivering interdisciplinary workshops, Lansley and Brinkman will create a dynamic and unique R&D context for innovative work, provide a unique professional development opportunity for a number of South West based performers and artists and contribute important practice led research outcomes to the community of interdisciplinary performance practice.
